English III: American Literature (Period 1)

Course Description

Hello!

I am Mrs. Foor and will be finishing this school year as your English teacher. Attached you will find a schedule of assignments and your weekly citizenship rubric. Office hours will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45pm-3:30pm. Should you choose to seek assistance with any classwork during office hours, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to attain transportation pickup at the end time.

Contact information will be given within the week, as well as any handouts/templates needed for work to be uploaded on the Summit Teacher Page(s). Be sure to utilize this page as it will have some of your handouts that are necessary for you to complete assignments.

Each week we will continue with an exciting look at literature and continue Ms. Wirtz’s mission:

[The essential] exposure to all literature that discusses the experiences, triumphs, and struggles of many cultures.

We are going to have a blast these last eight weeks and I look forward to teaching you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Foor

Creative Writing

If you are working on your creative writing story at home, here are the guidelines.

Go into as much detail as possible. When you feel you've described EVERYTHING, go back through it and describe some more. For example, buildings, clothing, the past, ages, expressions, thoughts in one's mind. Imagine the reader has no idea what you are talking about-- go into so much detail, the reader can't help but imagine what you have in your mind.

DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE

Use a bubble map to organize your thoughts, after that is done, use it as a guide to start your writing.

You are to incorporate and underline 2 VOCABULARY words from each chapter (chapters 1-7) in your story. You can find the words in class or on this website.

  1. Who is she? Or who is she looking for/at?
  2. What is going through her mind?
  3. When in her life is this happening?
  4. Where is the woman and her children? Or where is her husband?
  5. Why is she looking this way?

First or third person point-of-view

Classwork for today (4.28)

If you do not know what happened in chapter 7, be sure to read it on your own time.

Complete the vocabulary for chapter 7 of "The Great Gatsby".

Write the term, part-of-speech, definition

  1. Dilatory
  2. Caravansary
  3. Affront
  4. Boisterous
